The Sunshine Lady Foundation Supports The Bognár Family Hungarian Scholarship Fund with a $25,000 Grant

Washington, DC – The Hungarian American Coalition (Coalition) received a grant of $25,000 from the Sunshine Lady Foundation to support the Bognár Family Hungarian Scholarship Fund (BFHSF)’s mission.

BFHSF was established in 1999 by Dr. Béla and April Bognár to provide assistance to qualified Hungarian university students living and/or studying in Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, Serbia, and the United States to finish their educations in their own countries or in the United States, and to remain or return to their home countries to provide leadership in their communities. In 2014, the Coalition took over administrative duties for this program, including fundraising, selecting scholarship recipients and program evaluation.

Since its inception, the scholarship fund has awarded more than $650,000 to 228 Hungarian students in the US and the Carpathian Basin. As of May 2018, 184 students have graduated with at least first degrees. Of these 184 graduates, ninety per cent returned to live and work in their home communities.

The Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF), a private family foundation founded in 1996 and directed by Ms. Doris Buffett, sister of famed businessman and philanthropist Mr. Warren Buffett and daughter of businessman Mr. Howard Buffett, is one of the major supporters of the BFHSF. The mission of the Sunshine Lady Foundation is to invest in organizations and programs dedicated to providing opportunities for the advancement of education, well-being and new life choices for disadvantaged people with special empathy for the working poor and families in crisis.

Contributions to the Coalition are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
